Description

Progeny is a VR game that takes place during those few seconds between “You Died” and videogame resurrection. It presents players with a sci-fi world, seen only through their deceased character’s memories, and a choice: which of those memories do they take with them into the next life? In Progeny, you are a clone—the 7th of your line—undergoing the routine process of transferring your progenitor’s memory into your mind. A voice guides you through the process, and a message from your (former) self encourages your ambition. But there’s a hitch: the knowledge from your myriad lives is too much to contain in your finite brain, and with every clone generation, it just gets worse. Review the report of your previous life and choose which of your many memories you wish to take with you before embarking on a new one; the memories you pick will help determine the kind of person you become, leading to new adventures, and thus, new memories. And then you do it all again. Immortality isn’t always glamorous, but what’s the alternative?

History

Progeny was originally created for the 2017 Global Game Jam with a diverse team of friends and colleagues of Silverstring Media, and given some additional polish before this release. The idea was inspired by a panel at PAX Dev 2016 about giving player death narrative meaning. While listened to the panellists, Claris set about wondering what a game would be like that existed entirely within the liminal space of your respawn (from YOU’RE DEAD to LOADING). At a later date, she wondered if it would positively impact a VR game if the player’s situation (wearing a perception-altering headset) and the protagonist’s were physically similar. Those separate ideas came together to form Progeny. The world and lore of the game comes from a fake sci-fi franchise called “The Dusty Dead” that Lucas, Claris, and ceMelusine created in 2015 as part of their ongoing “Book of the Dead” project.
